Another year of European Researchers’ Night shows the interest in science.
This year, as always, CNIC participated in European Researchers’ Night with three activities
DNA adventure. Explore and edit
A group of 8-12 year old children had the opportunity to find out about DNA, mutations, types of mutation and repair systems, with simple explanations given by researchers from CNIC’s Molecular Regulation of Heart Failure group. After the theory, came hands-on experience with practical examples of mutations and their consequences in the development of diseases. Researchers’ Night

Researching rare diseases: challenges and opportunities
Knowing what rare diseases are, such as the premature ageing, Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome (progeria), and what difficulties their patients face was the subject of the activity Investigating rare diseases: challenges and opportunities.
Vicente Andrés, Ignacio Benedicto, Beatriz Dorado, Mª Jesús Andrés-Manzano and Pilar Gonzalo of CNIC’s Molecular and Genetic Cardiovascular Pathophysiology group, explained about this rare disease and the basic research that we do in animal models to better understand why the symptoms arise. The ultimate goal of our research is to help design therapies that improve the quality of life and survival of patients with progeria.
RESILIENCE workshop and laboratory visit. Surviving cancer with a strong heart
The people who attended CNIC’s RESILIENCE H2020 workshop, funded by the European Commission to reduce the incidence of heart failure among patients who have overcome a cancer, were able to visit the laboratory and workplace of this project’s researchers, where they discovered first-hand the use of technology (cardiovascular MRI, echocardiography and heart CT scan), and the innovations of this research project aimed at improving the lives of cancer patients.
