Dr Valentin Fuster receives the Astrazeneca Foundation Honorific Award for Excellence in Scientific Research
The AstraZeneca Foundation gives the Honorific Award for Excellence in Scientific Research in recognition of the career of scientists who have contributed to generating knowledge and progress in their field of specialization. Dr Valentín Fuster, General Director of the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research Carlos III (CNIC), President of the Cardiovascular Institute, and Physician-in-Chief, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York received the award for his contributions to cardiovascular medicine which have had an enormous impact on improving the treatment of patients with heart conditions.
David Sancho wins the 28th Carmen and Severo Ochoa Award for Research in Molecular Biology
The CNIC researcher Dr David Sancho Madrid received the 28th Carmen and Severo Ochoa Award for Research in Molecular Biology given by the Fundación Carmen y Severo Ochoa to scientists in recognition of their research work in the field of molecular biology undertaken in Spain.
This award has been given annually since its creation in 1994 and is worth 12,000 euros.
Rodrigo Fernández Jiménez, “Gabriella Morreale” National Youth Research and Award Winner
The CNIC researcher Rodrigo Fernández Jiménez has won the Gabriella Morreale National Youth Research Award in the area of Medicine and Health Sciences. The National Research Awards acknowledge the merit of researchers with Spanish nationality who perform outstanding work in internationally important fields of science and make a significant contribution to the advance of scientific knowledge and the progress of humankind.
Mount Sinai Hospital changes the name of its Cardiovascular Hospital to “Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital” in honour of Dr Fuster
Mount Sinai Hospital has changed the name of its Cardiovascular Hospital, which will now be called the “Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital” in honour of Dr Valentín Fuster, General Director of CNIC. The change of name comes in recognition of Dr Fuster’s profound impact not only in the field of cardiology, but also in his leadership at Mount Sinai.
Reseacher Ana Paredes wins the International Birnstiel Award 2023
The CNIC researcher Dr Ana Paredes, received the International Birnstiel Award 2023 for the research undertaken for her doctorate under the supervision of Dr Mercedes Ricote, on cardiac metabolism.

The cardiovascular polypill developed by CNIC and Ferrer was included on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines The cardiovascular polypill, which includes three active principles (acetylsalicylic acid, ramipril and atorvastatin), has proven effective in the prevention of cardiovascular events after a heart attack, reducing mortality for cardiovascular causes by 33%. The pill’s strategy was endorsed by the results of the SECURE study, published in August 2022 by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

CNIC creates an award for EUCYS, the eu contest for young scientists
Each year, the EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) brings together young people between the ages of 14 and 20 whose projects in any area of science have been selected by each participating country for presentation to the international jury. At the latest edition, EUCYS-2022, CNIC created a new award, the CNIC Prize, which consists of an internship at CNIC for the person presenting a project related with CNIC research, tutored by Dr Maria Angeles Moro, who has also worked on the committee that selects the winning projects for some years. The award aims to foster continuity. The young scientist Lucia Cengelova was the first person to receive the CNIC Prize thanks to her work “Computational design and experimental construction of stable enzymes”. The CNIC Prize received funding from the Severo Ochoa Programme, whose objective is to foster excellence in all fields of scientific research in Spain.
CNIC gets on the move with the Carrera del Corazón fun run
Nothing is better for cardiovascular health than practising what you preach. That’s why a group of researchers from CNIC participated in the 14th Carrera Popular del Corazón fun run organised by the Spanish Heart Foundation.
