Assistant Health Scientist to lead a research line in the clinical cardiovascular imaging field

The Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (F.S.P.) CNIC has been conceived to develop research of excellence, competitive and of international relevance in relation to cardiovascular diseases. The CNIC has a research center of 24,000 m2, located in Madrid, with more than 6,000 m2 for laboratories equipped with a state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment.

The CNIC is searching for an excellent investigator at the early stage of her/his career (i.e. starting her/his own research line under the supervision of Borja Ibanez). The investigator will lead and develop a research line in the field of clinical cardiovascular imaging for early diagnosis of CVD within the “myocardial homeostasis and cardiac injury” program (https://www.cnic.es/en/research-programs)

As Assistant Health Scientist, the selected candidate will work part time to be able to retain some clinical work. The investigator will start her/his research line under the supervision of Borja Ibanez. The researcher must have experience in clinical imaging.

Mandatory requirements:

1.- PhD in Biomedical Sciences obtained within the previous 5 years (i.e. 2019 onwards)
2.- MD and Cardiologist
3.- Excellent track record of recent scientific publications, fulfilling at least one of these 2 criteria:

           a) A minimum of 1 original article as main author (first, last, or corresponding author) in a journal ranked as TOP3 in the year of publication in the cardiology and cardiovascular medicine field.

           b) A minimum of 3 original articles as first author in a journal ranked as first decile in the year of publication

4.- Participate (or have participated) as principal investigator or collaborator in a minimum of 3 research projects funded by public competitive agencies.

Valuable requirements:

  • C1. Publications as main author (first, last, or corresponding author) in journals ranked in first decile in the year of publication in the cardiology and cardiovascular medicine or metabolism fields in the previous 5 years (i.e. since July 2019)
  • C2. Publications as contributing author in journals ranked in first decile in the year of publication in the cardiology and cardiovascular medicine or metabolism fields in the previous 5 years (i.e. since July 2019)
  • C3. Participation in competitive research projects: number of research project funded by public agencies through competitive calls
  • C4. Participation in clinical trials or cohort studies
  • C5. International experience as researcher in a laboratory based outside of Spain
  • C6. Experience in clinical imaging (i.e., cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, cardiac compute tomography, vascular ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound, cardiac/vascular PET)
  • C7. Interview

Selection Plan:

La RESOLUCIÓN DE LA SECRETARÍA DE ESTADO DE FUNCIÓN PÚBLICA POR LA QUE SE APRUEBAN LOS CRITERIOS DE ACTUACION COMUNES EN LOS PROCESOS SELECTIVOS DE LAS ENTIDADES DEL SECTOR PÚBLICO ESTATAL de 11 de abril de 2022, establece en el punto 6.1 que “Salvo que una normativa específica prevea el sistema selectivo de concurso, el sistema selectivo será el de concurso-oposición”

In CNIC, the specific regulations approved by the Foundation's board of trustees establish a merit-base recruitment system (concurso) including a personal interview.

At least 3 candidates with the highest score will be interviewed (as long as they reach the minimum of 70 points in the total of the evaluation criteria, C1-C6, see below). The candidate with the highest score will be hired given the total score is higher than 85 points (C1-C7).

"In the event of absence of any of the evaluators an alternate evaluator will be appointed"

Evaluation Criteria:

C1- Publications as main author (first, last, or corresponding author) in journals ranked in first decile in the year of publication in the cardiology and cardiovascular medicine or metabolism fields in the previous 5 years (i.e. since July 2019) – 30%

The CV must include the complete list of authors and the journal´s impact factor and ranking in the year of publication for each publication published since July 2019.

This criterion will be valued according to the scientific impact of the papers (journal ranking and citation record) and according to the number of papers published as main author (first, last, or corresponding author)

C2- Publications as contributing author in journals ranked in first decile in the year of publication in the cardiology and cardiovascular medicine or metabolism fields in the previous 5 years (i.e. since July 2019) – 10%

The CV must include the complete list of authors and the journal´s impact factor and ranking in the year of publication for each publication published since July 2019.

This criterion will be valued according to the scientific impact of the papers (journal ranking and citation record) and according to the number of papers as contributing author

C3- Participation in competitive research projects: number of research project funded by public agencies through competitive calls – 15%

This criterion will be valued according to the relevance of the funding source, the amount granted, and the number of projects

The CV must include each project, indicating the role of the candidate in the grant, amount granted, period of funding, and funding agency

C4- Participation in clinical trials or cohort studies – 10%

This criterion will be valued according to the number of trials/studies and role of the candidate in them

The CV must indicate the role of the candidate in the clinical trial or cohort studies

C5- International experience as researcher in a laboratory based outside of Spain (years spent, prestige of the center) – 5%

C6- Experience in clinical imaging (cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, cardiac compute tomography, vascular ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound, cardiac/vascular PET) – 10%

C7- Interview – 20%
