In September 2016, the General Director of CNIC was appointed co-director of the committee “Global Health and the Future Role of the United States”.

The General Director of CNIC and Director of the Cardiovascular Institute and “Physician-in-Chief” of Mount Sinai, Valentin Fuster, was appointed co-director of the committee “Global Health and the Future Role of the United States”, in September of 2016, along with Jendayi Frazer, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs of the American Government. The committee was responsible for advising the presidency of the country on the decision to take for the improvement of global health with a multidisciplinary approach that would allow the efficient and responsible management of the resources that are used in this direction by the North American Administration.

The presentation of the report “Global Health and the Future Role of the United States” resulting from this work group took place this week and was rebroadcasted worldwide from the headquarters of the “National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine” in Washington. It identifies health challenges and priorities and makes 14 recommendations and priority areas for the US Government and the rest of the agents involved in health.

During the presentation, Dr. Fuster insisted that “by investing in global health over the next 20 years we can save the lives of millions of children and adults”. He also warned about the urgency of the importance of non-communicable diseases, that cause 40 million deaths, almost three quarters of which occur in countries of developing economies. According to his statements during the presentation, “the costs are also increasing. It is estimated that the cardiovascular diseases alone will cost the world a trillion dollars in treatments and loss of productivity in 2030.”
