Dr Valentín Fuster receives the AstraZeneca Foundation Honorific Award for Excellence in Scientific Research
The Honorific Award for Excellence in Scientific Research is awarded in recognition of the career of scientists who have contributed to the generation of knowledge and advances in their field of specialization
The AstraZeneca Foundation awarded its Honorific Award for Excellence in Scientific Research, in recognition of the career of scientists who have contributed to generating knowledge and progress in their field of specialization, to Dr Valentín Fuster General Director of the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research Carlos III (CNIC), President of the Cardiovascular Institute, and Physician-in-Chief, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York for his contributions to cardiovascular medicine, which have had an enormous impact on improving the treatment of patients with heart conditions.
Dr Valentín Fuster’s research work covers a range of areas related with heart function, but it was his research into the origin of strokes that contributed to improving the prevention and treatment of heart attacks for which he received the Prince of Asturias award for research.

Research into cardiovascular diseases has been the driving force behind my entire scientific career and it makes me immensely happy to see all the effort of my teams rewarded with this prize. This award is motivation to continue researching and working to improve the promotion of health and tackle cardiovascular diseases” comments Dr Valentín Fuster.
Dr Vicente Andrés , director of basic research at CNIC, collected the award in his name during the 7th edition of the Young Researcher Awards.
