William Joyce received his BSc in Zoology from the University of Manchester (United Kingdom) and PhD in Bioscience from Aarhus University (Denmark). During his doctorate he studied the regulation of diastolic filling of the heart, mainly in reptiles and fishes. This included research trips to Antarctica, Texas (USA), and Amsterdam (the Netherlands). In his postdoctoral career he continued to investigate the evolution of the heart and cardiac proteins at the University of Ottawa (Canada), University of Manchester, and Aarhus University.
He joined in the Ibáñez group at CNIC in September 2023 through a contract held with CIBER (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red). His main ongoing interests are the function of sarcomeric proteins, adrenergic signalling pathways, and cardiac metabolism.
